Kevin Hern’s Senate Campaign and the SAVE America Act

Deep within the districts strongly supporting Trump, Rep. Kevin Hern from Oklahoma is pondering why the Senate has not advanced a critical voter ID and citizenship verification bill. Hern, who recently secured a primary win in Oklahoma, frequently hears from voters eager for the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act to pass in Congress.

“They’re expressing the need to focus on the SAVE Act,” Hern shared before the primary election day. “This sentiment is repeated constantly.” However, the bill remains stalled in the Senate, with Democrats committed to blocking it and several Republicans also opposing it in its various forms.

“I am uncertain why my fellow Republican senators do not back this legislation,” Hern remarked. “I understand Democrats’ opposition as they typically resist anything that protects America.” Hern, who has served five terms in the House, has ascended to the fourth-highest position in House GOP leadership as Republican Policy Chair. He had also run for Speaker of the House following Kevin McCarthy’s ousting.

His transition from the House to a Senate bid followed President Trump’s nomination of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoman, to lead the DHS. Hern’s Senate campaign this year gained momentum with endorsements from both senators and President Trump, who commended Hern as being “strongly supported by the fiercest MAGA Warriors in Oklahoma” and “highly respected leaders in the United States Senate.”

Hern acknowledges the unwavering support for Trump in Oklahoma, stating that “voters love the president and appreciate my support and collaboration with him.” In November, Hern is unlikely to encounter significant opposition from the Democratic candidates due to Trump’s repeated victories across Oklahoma’s 77 counties.

Despite the favorable outlook, Hern remains diligent, rooted in his humble beginnings without indoor plumbing. His hard work led to owning a successful McDonald’s franchise in Oklahoma, earning him the nickname “McCongressman.”

“I value hard work, which allows you to compete effectively,” Hern stated. “In the Senate race, I set a strong tone from the beginning.” He highlighted the president’s prompt endorsement within 48 hours, crediting his consistent effort over eight years. For Hern, the theme of hard work is pivotal.

Looking ahead to November, Hern is not dismissive of aiming for Senate GOP leadership. He advises proactive effort, saying that waiting for opportunities might be too late as others may have already begun their preparations.

“Some believe they are prepared for leadership roles, but I have been actively working and building relationships,” Hern said. “This approach is crucial, and I am eager to see what opportunities arise.”
