In her message, she said, “As I move to physical rehabilitation, I want to thank everyone from our community, region, country, and even globally for their wishes.”

Kaptur, at 80, is the longest-serving woman in the U.S. House, representing Ohio since 1983. She and her staffer, Keegan Zimmerman, were involved in a “hit-skip” incident while heading to church. This term refers to a driver’s failure to stop following an accident. Both Kaptur and Zimmerman emerged with non-life-threatening injuries.

In her video, she acknowledged the overwhelming support received, saying, “Thank you so much for the well-wishes from across the globe. It significantly aided my recovery.” She also extended her gratitude to first responders and medical personnel for their dedicated care during the incident.

Both the relief of the House’s August recess and her decision to recover at home have given her additional time to recuperate. She aims to return to Washington next month. She stressed the importance of the medical staff at Mercy St. Vincent’s, stating, “Their dedication to patient care is outstanding. I was deeply impressed.”

This upcoming November, Kaptur seeks re-election in a pivotal contest against former Ohio State Rep. Derek Merrin, having narrowly defeated him in 2024. This race is crucial in Ohio, a key political battleground, where her previous victory was just above the threshold for a recount.

Kaptur ended her message by sharing a thoughtful handmade card from a young supporter, Avery, featuring Charlie, a dog Kaptur humorously described as “half-human.” “Such gestures are incredibly uplifting,” she noted.
