Rep. Al Green’s Renewed Impeachment Push Against President Trump

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, has once again filed a resolution for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. Green argues that Trump poses a significant threat to the United States’ democratic republic and Constitution. He claims that Trump’s actions violate Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of the U.S. Constitution, which mandates the faithful execution of the presidency and the protection and defense of the Constitution.

The resolution accuses Trump of abusing presidential powers by operating U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as unaccountable paramilitary forces. Green claims these forces have committed unjustified killings of civilians with impunity. He alleges this creates an authoritarian regime where such actions are normalized.

In response, White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis defended law enforcement officers, citing a rise in assaults against them. She stated that ICE and CBP officers risk their lives to apprehend criminals like murderers and rapists. Bis argued that Green should appreciate Trump’s efforts, which they believe resulted in the largest decrease in violent crime in American history.

Given the Republican majority in Congress, Green’s latest impeachment initiative may likely face challenges. Green communicated his determination through a letter to Trump, stating that even unapproved impeachment articles serve as a record of disapproval and demonstrate monitoring and willingness to act against presidential conduct.

The House has impeached Trump twice before during his first term. Despite this, the Senate votes did not result in conviction. The second impeachment vote occurred after Trump’s departure from office.
