Reflecting on a Fateful Day: Memories of September 11 from a New Yorker

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, a 9/11 memorial stands solemnly in New York City, reminding visitors of that day. The reflections come from a lifelong New Yorker, Daniel Edward Rosen, whose narrative illuminates how urban policy shapes the city’s identity.

In August 2001, Rosen had recently graduated from college. At that time, he resided in a shared converted loft in TriBeCa with four roommates. The loft offered a sweeping view of lower Manhattan, prominently featuring the World Trade Center, situated merely eight blocks away. The iconic towers dominated the skyline, symbols of the city’s vibrancy and architectural ambition.

The location and timing of Rosen’s residence in TriBeCa placed him in close proximity to the site of one of the most significant events in modern American history. As a New Yorker, his recollections provide important insight into personal and communal experiences associated with the attacks.
