Reading Rainbow Reboot Host Seeks Mental Health Treatment

The host of the “Reading Rainbow” reboot, Mychal Threets, is taking steps to prioritize his mental health. Threets announced on Threads that he plans to check into a hospital for treatment. He wrote, “I am not okay. I am seeking help. Going to the hospital tomorrow. In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace.”

Threets expressed gratitude towards those supporting him. “No matter what happens to me, I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people in my life who worry, who help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you,” he added.

“If you need the help, maybe go tonight, friend.” – Yvette Nicole Brown, actress

The literacy advocate and host received an outpouring of support. Another user encouraged him by saying, “Mychael, please get the help that you need because this world is a better place because you’re in it.” Others echoed similar sentiments, urging him to take care of himself.

Threets, known for his openness about mental health, gained a large online following in 2023 after sharing positive messages. His mental health struggles led to his resignation from a librarian position in California in 2024. At that time, Threets revealed to NBC Bay Area that he was feeling burnt out and had considered suicide.

In 2025, Threets was chosen to host “Reading Rainbow,” succeeding original host LeVar Burton. The popular children’s series originally aired from 1983 to 2006 on PBS.
