Psychiatrists Rethink Diagnoses Due to Social Media Trends

Maladaptive daydreaming, obsessional jealousy, and misophonia are gaining attention as social media trends compel psychiatrists to reassess their diagnostic guidelines.

As a teenager, Jaweria Syed would spend numerous hours each day lying on her bed with eyes closed. In her mind, she was a backup dancer for artists like Drake and Nicki Minaj. Her reality was quite different. Syed’s conservative Muslim family discouraged her from participating in after-school activities, leaving her with little opportunity to socialize outside.

This phenomenon, known as maladaptive daydreaming, is now being studied more closely by mental health professionals. It involves intense fantasizing that interferes with daily life. Obsessional jealousy and misophonia, a condition where certain sounds trigger emotional and physical responses, are also under scrutiny due to their rising prominence on social media platforms.

Social media has increased the visibility of these terms, prompting both individuals and clinicians to explore them more deeply. These discussions have led to rethinking the criteria for mental health diagnoses. By understanding these conditions better, psychiatrists aim to provide more accurate treatments for patients experiencing such symptoms.
