President Donald Trump made an unanticipated switch to an older Air Force One aircraft during his return from the NATO summit in Turkey. He initially arrived in a newly retrofitted plane, a gift from Qatar. This decision sparked security discussions as the United States and Iran exchanged strikes.
Trump decided to fly on the legacy aircraft “for old time’s sake”. Both planes made an unplanned stop at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, a base used by U.S. troops. The new jet lacked some missile detection and countermeasure systems present on the older aircraft.
At Mildenhall, Trump boarded the new plane and continued to Joint Base Andrews. He stated that the stopover allowed service members to view the new aircraft. On social media, Trump mentioned the detour was a minimal change to the return flight path from Turkey.
Reporters questioned Trump about the swap’s link to security issues with Iran. Trump dismissed such concerns, stating he is always a threat target and claimed he is Iran’s top assassination target.
Despite being asked to close window blinds on the flight from Turkey to the U.K., Trump noted it was unnecessary in his section. His remark about “sleazebags” seemed to comment on perceived threats from Iran.
Previous and Current Aircraft Security Measures
The security audit of the new aircraft intensified after U.S. strikes on Iranian targets. Trump used social media to inform followers that while the new plane was showcased in the U.K., he opted for the older aircraft.
The U.S. Air Force previously stated the new jet underwent essential upgrades, ensuring no compromise on security or safety. They acknowledged that some complex engineering modifications, intended for the final Air Force One, were excluded in this interim model.

spokesperson Steven Cheung remarked.
Trump’s departure from Turkey involved an older Boeing VC-25A, known for its secure communication and advanced countermeasures. Notably, the plane’s transponder was deactivated briefly post-takeoff, a standard security procedure in risk zones.
In contrast, other leaders’ departures, including those from Germany and the U.K., had trackable transponders. The new Qatari Boeing 747-800, modified for Trump, also took this route to RAF Mildenhall.
Iranian Threat Capabilities and Future Aircraft Plans
Iranian military assets can reach Turkey but lack the range to threaten destinations like England, over 2,500 miles away. The U.S. Air Force indicated that the new Qatari jet, or “bridge” aircraft, was quickly converted for presidential use without compromising security, though some features were omitted intentionally.
Jeremiah Gertler from the Teal Group noted the lack of countermeasure systems and fewer communication antennas on the Qatari jet. This suggests its use is more suited for domestic flights.
The original Air Force One models, created during the Cold War, include nuclear blast defenses and other security features. Current plans expect permanent Air Force One upgrades to complete by 2028, using two modified Boeing jets.
