President Trump’s Approval Ratings Ahead of Midterm Elections

Overview of Trump’s Approval Ratings

With the November midterm elections approaching, President Donald Trump’s approval ratings remain low across most states, except for a few Republican strongholds. Nationally, 35% of voters approve of Trump’s job performance, while 59% disapprove, according to Civiqs’ poll of registered voters.

This poll, which began when Trump was inaugurated for a second term, includes 124,759 responses. In key battleground states from the 2024 election, Trump is significantly underwater. These dynamics could impact Congressional control in the midterms.

State-by-State Approval Details

President Trump’s approval ratings vary widely across states. In Indiana and Mississippi, once positive, they have turned negative. In Wyoming, Trump enjoys his strongest approval at +22, with 56% approving versus 35% disapproving.

Other states with positive approval ratings include:

  • North Dakota: +18 (56% approve, 37% disapprove)
  • South Dakota: +9 (51% approve, 42% disapprove)
  • Alabama: +6 (49% approve, 43% disapprove)
  • Idaho: +9 (50% approve, 41% disapprove)

In Democratic strongholds, Trump’s approval ratings are notably low. Hawaii has the lowest net approval rating for Trump at -60, with only 18% approval.

Other states with very low approval ratings include:

  • Vermont: -54 (20% approve, 75% disapprove)
  • Maryland: -52 (21% approve, 73% disapprove)
  • Massachusetts: -48 (24% approve, 71% disapprove)
  • California: -43 (26% approve, 69% disapprove)
  • Connecticut: -41 (27% approve, 68% disapprove)

  • Oregon: -40 (28% approve, 68% disapprove)
  • New York: -39 (28% approve, 67% disapprove)

Impact on Battleground States

Trump is underwater in all seven swing states he carried in 2024, potentially affecting Republican chances in critical races.

The approval ratings in these states are:

  • Arizona: -13 (41% approve, 53% disapprove)
  • Georgia: -23 (35% approve, 58% disapprove)
  • Michigan: -22 (36% approve, 58% disapprove)
  • Nevada: -21 (36% approve, 58% disapprove)
  • North Carolina: -16 (39% approve, 55% disapprove)
  • Pennsylvania: -19 (37% approve, 56% disapprove)
  • Wisconsin: -17 (39% approve, 56% disapprove)

Even Florida, now leaning more Republican, shows a net approval of -11 for Trump.

Implications for Midterm Elections

Trump’s approval ratings may influence the Republican candidates’ success in the midterm elections. Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor, views presidential approval ratings as a “reliable predictor” of midterm outcomes.

“Net disapproval in most states may impact Republican candidates, with the possibility of Democrats gaining control of Congress,” Panagopoulos stated.

Expert Opinions and Possible Outcomes

Grant Davis Reeher, another political science professor, remarked that midterms often serve as referendums on the president’s first two years. Reeher noted that Democrats also suffer from low approval ratings, making predictions uncertain.

“Despite challenges, Democrats are expected to perform well,” Reeher said, “with a potential for regaining the House.”

White House Response

In response to polling queries, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle emphasized Trump’s mandate from the nearly 80 million voters supporting him, asserting his achievement in various sectors.

“President Trump is working tirelessly on job creation, inflation control, and more,” said Ingle. “Historic progress has been made by the president, continuing with his agenda.”
