Powerball lottery tickets are being sold in Portland, Ore., with Powerball ticket sales to start in the United Kingdom on Tuesday. This marks the first time a lottery outside the U.S. contributes to the Powerball jackpot. The initiative was announced through an agreement between the Multi-State Lottery Association in the U.S. and Allwyn UK.

The introduction of Powerball in the UK offers players there the opportunity to compete for significantly larger jackpots than those available in local and European lotteries. The inaugural drawing for UK players will occur on Wednesday night.

The largest Powerball payout reached over $2 billion from a ticket bought in 2022 in California. Comparatively, EuroMillions, operated by Allwyn in the UK and available in nine European countries, distributed a maximum of 250 million euros to winners in France, Ireland, and Austria in 2025.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, and these odds will remain the same for both U.S. and UK players. U.S. officials highlight that the expanded player base could lead to quicker growth in jackpots, drawing more interest due to larger prizes.

Powerball tickets are priced at $2. UK purchases will only accrue towards the Powerball jackpot, with lower-tier prizes structured differently. Estimated jackpots in each region will vary in amount due to currency conversions and tax implications. In the UK, jackpots will be paid over 30 years, differing from the U.S. option where winners can choose annuity payments or a lump-sum cash option.

Powerball is played in 45 U.S. states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Participants select five white-ball numbers between 1 and 69 and one red Powerball number ranging from 1 to 26. Drawings occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
