Power Restoration Nearly Complete Following Violent Storms in Indiana

Power Restoration Update

After over two weeks of power outages caused by violent storms, almost all residents in Gary, Indiana, have their electricity restored as of Wednesday. Fewer than 250 customers remain without power, according to the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO). NIPSCO announced on their website that large-scale restoration efforts following the August 11 storm are substantially complete, with crews focusing on remaining individual outage cases.

The Impact of the Derecho

On August 11, a derecho, featuring straight-line winds between 70 to over 100 mph, struck Indiana and parts of the Midwest. The National Weather Service confirmed this storm caused severe damage by taking down power lines. NIPSCO stated this resulted in the most extensive damage in the company’s history, affecting 80% of its customers, equating to approximately 375,000 people.

Alongside the derecho, tornadoes contributed to the damage. This included a 26-mile-long EF2 tornado originating in Illinois and entering Indiana, reported to have peak winds of 110 mph. The tornado caused significant damage to roofs and uprooted trees, according to weather agencies.

Local Response and Criticism

NIPSCO faced criticism for delayed recovery efforts. Gary Mayor Eric Melton expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of restoration. Residents faced hardships during this period, with some resorting to sleeping in their cars with air conditioning due to extreme heat.

Additionally, reports emerged of generator thefts in affected neighborhoods. Health concerns were also notable, with individuals unable to access necessary medical equipment. Questions arose among residents about potential racial bias in service restoration timing, though NIPSCO clarified that the outages were solely determined by storm impact locations.

Official Actions and Response

Governor Mike Braun criticized NIPSCO’s response and called for an investigation, emphasizing that as a monopoly utility, NIPSCO should have maintained its system better and restored services swiftly after a disaster. Braun confirmed that President Donald Trump had approved a major disaster declaration, enabling further aid.

Storm-related fatalities in Indiana totaled seven, with individuals from Lake, Delaware, Jennings, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties among the victims, according to official reports.

NIPSCO’s Statement

NIPSCO President and CEO Vince Parisi urged for patience from customers, acknowledging the unprecedented damage while highlighting restoration efforts. Parisi stated that thousands worked tirelessly to complete restoration and now focus on community recovery.
