Miller insists he has not abused either her or their daughter and has not been charged with any crime.
Bernie Moreno Urges Miller to Resign
Senator Bernie Moreno publicly suggested Miller resign from the House of Representatives, citing remarks made during an online conflict with Miller. In response, Miller accused Moreno of exploiting the situation for political reasons. He stated he had previously spoken privately to Moreno regarding his daughter’s mental health and claimed the allegations were false.
A number of Republican lawmakers have voiced support for Moreno or expressed concern following these exchanges. Miller faces a Wednesday deadline to withdraw from the ballot, after which Republicans could hold a replacement primary for the congressional seat.
Miller’s Rejection of Accusations
In reaction to reports of GOP senators urging him to step down, Miller emphasized that all accusations had been dismissed as unfounded by courts and mediators. He appeared in a livestream, firmly rejecting the abuse allegations and pledging to continue his reelection campaign. Miller argued that the allegations severely harmed his reputation, family, and daughter.
He stated no court or agency had substantiated the abuse claims and noted the absence of any criminal charges. Miller shared legal documents concerning the accusations, inviting public scrutiny of them.
Possible Replacements Contemplated
Several names have emerged as possible candidates if Miller steps down. These include State Representative Mike Dovilla, a U.S. Navy veteran and former presidential appointee; former U.S. Representative Jim Renacci, who once served parts of Northeast Ohio in Congress; State Representative Melanie Miller; and former State Senator Kevin Coughlin.
Renacci expressed cautious interest in running if Miller withdraws, citing his existing political network and name recognition in the area. Despite receiving calls encouraging him to run, Renacci believes Miller will remain in the race.
Trump’s Comments on the Situation
Former President Trump weighed in, describing Miller as a good person but opting to leave the resolution to the involved families. Trump acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and mentioned a conversation with Miller where he warned of a challenging reelection bid. Though Miller requested public support from Trump, he noted that Trump seemed supportive in their conversation.
In response to Miller’s video comments about Emily Moreno, her spokesperson criticized Miller for attempting to bolster his political career through the allegations, which they characterized as rife with violent behavior evidence.
