Political Newcomer N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas Challenges Oklahoma’s Historical Voting Trends

A political newcomer, N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, has made headlines in Oklahoma with her recent victory. As a nurse who has never run for office before, Thomas clinched the Democratic Senate nomination by defeating Jim Priest, a lawyer and nonprofit executive, in the runoff election.

Thomas emerged as the frontrunner in a competitive primary that included five candidates. Her success sets the stage for a significant challenge in Oklahoma, where no Democrat has been elected to the U.S. Senate in over thirty years.

The battle lines are drawn in Oklahoma, where voters haven’t sent a Democrat to the Senate in decades.

As she embarks on her campaign, Thomas outlines several key policy proposals on her website. These include increasing teacher pay, restoring Roe v. Wade, and expanding the Affordable Care Act. Her agenda reflects standard Democratic priorities.

Thomas has also expressed a clear intent to focus on impeaching President Donald Trump during her initial days in the Senate. In an interview with NPR affiliate KOSU, Thomas emphasized her determination, stating, “I will make sure that I work as diligently as I can to make sure that within my first 100 days that we impeach, remove and convict.”

Her comments underscore a strong desire to hold the administration accountable, which she stressed by saying, “They will have to pry that pen out of my cold, dead hands before I go any further with allowing this administration to continue doing what they’re doing.”

Before she can bring any of her plans to fruition, Thomas must win against her Republican opponent, Rep. Kevin Hern, in the upcoming November election. This poses a substantial challenge since Trump won Oklahoma by nearly 35 points in 2024.

While Thomas has demonstrated the ability to outperform expectations, securing approximately 45% of the vote in the initial Democratic nomination race and later overtaking Priest, Hern represents a formidable opponent.

Rep. Kevin Hern has accumulated a substantial campaign fund that once reached nearly $10 million. In contrast, Thomas’s fundraising efforts have generated under $60,000. Hern’s endorsements include Trump’s backing, and he remains committed to pushing the president’s policy priorities, such as the SAVE America Act.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Hern highlighted the disparity in values between Oklahomans and Thomas. He remarked, “Socialist Democrats like N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas are wildly out of touch with the values of Oklahomans and the direction they want our country moving toward.” He added, “President Trump and Republicans are focused on delivering results.”

The outcome of the November election will determine whether Thomas can defy historical voting trends in Oklahoma.
