Oklahoma Political Races
Two significant races are underway in Oklahoma, a predominantly Republican state. Governor Kevin Stitt is approaching the end of his term limit. Former U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin has stepped down to become the Homeland Security Secretary. Currently, Republican Alan Armstrong, an energy executive, is temporarily holding Mullin’s Senate seat. However, state law prevents him from running for a full term as the interim appointee.
Rep. Kevin Hern, who has served four terms and received an endorsement from Donald Trump, is among five candidates in the Republican primary for the Senate. The Republican primary for governor features nine candidates, including several well-known figures. If no candidate secures at least 50% of the votes, an August 25 runoff will occur.
California Special Election
California is holding a special election to fill the seat of former Rep. Eric Swalwell after his resignation. Swalwell, who left in April amidst sexual assault allegations, was a strong contender for the California governor race. He denies the accusations and plans to contest them. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a woman accused Swalwell of assaults in 2019 and 2024, stating she was too intoxicated to consent.
Georgia GOP Runoffs
Georgia’s runoff elections will determine the Republican nominees for the Senate and governor. Rep. Mike Collins, branding himself as a “MAGA warrior,” is contesting against newcomer Derek Dooley in the Senate race. The winner will challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in November. Donald Trump endorsed Collins just days before the runoff.
For the gubernatorial race, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones vies against billionaire Rick Jackson. Trump supported Jones in August. The victor will face Democratic opponent Keisha Lance Bottoms, Atlanta’s ex-mayor, in the upcoming November election.
Washington, DC Primaries
Voting has opened in Washington, DC, for what is considered one of the most significant primaries in recent memory. It marks the first time since 1990 that Democrats in the capital can elect both a new mayor and a new delegate to Congress simultaneously. This opportunity comes at a politically notable time as the city continues to evolve.
