A tragic incident unfolded in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, where Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was fatally stabbed. His wife remains in critical but stable condition following the attack.
Police confirmed that 46-year-old Dr. Evans was killed in their home early Thursday morning. The Allegheny County Police Department reported the incident occurred in the 100 block of Linden Avenue at 12:31 a.m., where both victims were found with multiple stab wounds.
Dr. Evans was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His wife received medical treatment and remains hospitalized.
Authorities have apprehended 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh as the suspect. Witness reports suggest Hemingway entered the couple’s home and attacked them as they slept. Dr. Evans’ wife recounted waking to find the attacker wielding a kitchen knife and making disturbing statements, including comments about being a deity.
The couple’s children, aged 8 and 12, were present during the ordeal. Evans’ wife managed to instruct them to flee to a neighbor’s house for safety.
Investigators are trying to establish the nature of the relationship between Evans and Hemingway. Although Mrs. Evans claimed she did not know Hemingway, her husband referred to the attacker by name during the confrontation, raising questions about a prior connection.
A Monroeville Police Department K-9 unit located Hemingway hiding behind a nearby home, bearing injuries on his hand. He is currently hospitalized and awaiting transfer to Allegheny County Jail. Hemingway faces numerous charges, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing.
Authorities are still probing the motive behind Hemingway’s actions, and whether he and Dr. Evans had any association.
Dr. Evans was a respected medical director and assistant professor affiliated with both UPMC Children’s Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His commitment to pediatric care was recognized, leaving a profound impact on his community.
The UPMC spokesperson expressed sorrow over Dr. Evans’ death, highlighting his significant contributions as a caregiver and academic. The hospital and university communities mourn his loss and extend condolences to his family and colleagues, emphasizing the importance of respecting their privacy during this difficult time.
