Phil Weiser Takes Lead in Colorado Democratic Gubernatorial Race

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is leading in the race to become the Democratic nominee for governor. As of 8 p.m. MT, with 77% of votes counted, Weiser secured 54.7% of the vote, while Sen. Michael Bennet received 45.3%.

Weiser, who is finishing his term as Attorney General, is seeking the governor’s seat for the first time. Similarly, this is Bennet’s initial attempt at becoming governor.

During the primary election period, Weiser attempted to harness anti-establishment sentiments by depicting Bennet as a political insider. This approach came despite Weiser’s eight-year tenure in office.

Television audiences were exposed to numerous attack ads, targeting both candidates for lacking strong “anti-Trump credentials.” Political Reporter Shaun Boyd noted that Weiser received significant campaign contributions from 68 lawyers associated with firms that interacted with his office. Bennet argued this posed a conflict of interest.

The Democratic nominee will face off against the Republican winner from Tuesday’s GOP primary. State Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer, state Rep. Scott Bottoms, and Victor Marx are vying for that nomination. Additionally, former Congressman Greg Lopez, who has left the Republican Party to run as an unaffiliated candidate, will also be in the race.

For the past two decades, a Democrat has held the governorship in Colorado. The election will take place on November 3.
