Penalties Set Back IndyCar Teams Ahead of Freedom 250 Grand Prix

Early on Sunday morning, several teams and drivers faced setbacks due to penalties ahead of the IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix.

Nolan Siegel’s No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, Marcus Ericsson’s No. 28 Andretti Global Honda, and Mick Schumacher’s No. 47 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda each received six-place grid penalties for unapproved engine changes. These penalties add them to a list alongside Santino Ferrucci in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet, who faces similar consequences.

Teams often accept penalties like these near the season’s end because there is a limit on the number of engines allowed per season. However, moving down six places on the grid can be challenging, especially on circuits where overtaking remains uncertain.

All three penalized cars demonstrated speed at various points over the weekend. Ericsson expressed optimism about overtaking possibilities, which now provides him a chance to demonstrate his skills further down the order.

The half-hour warm-up on Sunday morning offered teams a final opportunity to prepare for the demanding 250-mile race around the National Mall. Except for a few cars using run-off areas, the session was smooth, providing some relief to the teams.

The race action is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET, following pre-race coverage that starts at 11:30 a.m. ET on FOX.
