Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has consistently denied any awareness of former President Joe Biden’s reported decline. On Tuesday, she stated that if anyone had knowledge of such an issue, they should have taken action. Speaking to Politico’s Jonathan Martin, Pelosi repeatedly asserted, “I didn’t know,” emphasizing that those who did were obliged to act upon the information available to them.
Pelosi mentioned confusion over who actually had information about Biden’s condition. “There was the staff saying the family knew, the family saying the staff knew, I don’t know,” she remarked, recognizing that earlier interventions might have been necessary. Although there was some tension surrounding the 2024 race between Pelosi and Biden, they had a conversation in March to address any differences.
Jill Biden once expressed concern that Joe might have suffered a stroke during a poor debate performance related to the 2024 race. Despite rumors, Pelosi dismissed claims that she pressured Biden to exit the race. She clarified her position, explaining, “I only said to President Biden, ‘I’ve come to question the polling that you have and how your campaign is being conducted.'” Pelosi further recommended involving other pollsters to analyze campaign data.
Pelosi conveyed to Martin that she did inquire about testing to ensure Biden’s capacity to serve another term. Biden’s response centered on being tested daily through his duties. Pelosi discussed the situation, stating, “He responded. We were prayerful, you know, Catholic. We had our rosaries and all that. And we had a lovely meeting.” She confirmed the meeting’s privacy, noting the inclusion of someone via phone to talk about poll data.
Political analyst Guy Benson criticized Pelosi’s recent comments as “non-credible gaslighting.” He argued that Biden’s decline was clear to observers and that Pelosi, among others, purportedly dismissed it to achieve a political objective. Benson accused Pelosi of turning against Biden when the situation demanded a shift in support.
During an appearance on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” in July 2024, Pelosi hinted that Biden was contemplating his candidacy, despite having previously reassured Democrats of his intention to stay in the race. She urged, “It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run. We are all encouraging him to make that decision, because time is running short.” At the time of reporting, Biden’s office had not replied to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
