Senator Darline Graham, the newly appointed South Carolina Republican, has received President Trump’s endorsement to run for her late brother’s Senate seat.

On Friday, President Trump encouraged Senator Graham to enter the race for Lindsey Graham’s position, reshaping the field of Republican candidates. “Lindsey was one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, and his sister shares his deep love of our Country,” President Trump stated in a social media post after meeting with her in the Oval Office. He expressed desire for Ms. Graham to run in the special Republican primary on August 11, 2026.

This endorsement signifies a significant development within the race following Governor Henry McMaster’s appointment of Ms. Graham as interim replacement for her brother, completing his term until January. Initially viewed as a temporary placeholder, her appointment might now serve as a launchpad for a Senate campaign, enhanced by name recognition and incumbency.

President Trump pledged his “Complete and Total Endorsement” to Ms. Graham, which has the potential to significantly influence the race. Several Republicans are considering the nomination, aiming to challenge Dr. Annie Andrews, the Democratic candidate. These include Representatives Russell Fry, Nancy Mace, Ralph Norman, and Lt. Governor Pamela Evette.

Though Trump’s endorsement holds substantial sway in South Carolina, it doesn’t guarantee an uncontested path, as demonstrated by previous endorsement patterns. Ms. Graham is currently appointed until January 3, 2027, marking the end of Lindsey Graham’s term. Candidates must file by July 28 for the primary on August 11.
