On Wednesday afternoon, two individuals scaled the Empire State Building in New York City and displayed a pro-peace banner. The man and woman, both dressed in dark clothing and wearing masks, unfurled a flag with a message: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”
During the event, the man knelt and appeared to propose, resulting in the couple embracing and kissing. NBC New York captured the scene as helicopters circled above.
After descending to the street, the New York City Police Department, represented by spokeswoman Delaney Kempner, took the pair into custody.
Their appearance on the Empire State Building, holding a black flag with white text, attracted significant attention. However, details on how they reached the building’s peak remain unclear. The couple managed to scale the spire, which adds 200 feet to the 1,250-foot structure, one of the tallest in the USA.
Air traffic control records show an inquiry about the activity atop the building. One person inquired about the commotion, while another speculated about the conditions being too hot for such an endeavor.
This incident took place as New York City dealt with rising visitor numbers due to World Cup matches and the upcoming Fourth of July festivities. Additionally, the city is preparing for a potential wedding involving pop star Taylor Swift and football player Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden.
