Three additional subcontractors involved with the Obama Presidential Center have filed legal claims, alleging they are owed nearly $900,000. These claims contribute to ongoing payment issues associated with the construction project.
The companies have filed mechanics liens against the property, a standard legal mechanism to reclaim unpaid construction costs. They assert they are due payments for work involving structural steel, excavation and concrete, and gymnasium flooring for Home Court, the center’s 60,000-square-foot basketball and events facility.
Subcontractor Claims
- Area Erectors: Claims nearly $620,000 for structural steel work.
- CSI 3000: As the sole Minority Business Enterprise among them, claims they are owed approximately $236,000 for excavation and concrete work.
- Floors Incorporated: Alleges an outstanding amount of nearly $25,000 for gymnasium flooring.
Unlike earlier disputes reported by Fox News Digital, which mainly covered the main campus, these allegations pertain specifically to Home Court. Home Court is currently hosting various significant WNBA All-Star Weekend events.
Construction and Oversight
The Obama Presidential Center, located in Chicago’s Jackson Park, has encountered numerous challenges, including rising costs and legal complications regarding contracts and diversity requirements. Initially estimated at around $350 million, the project’s cost has exceeded $1 billion.
Home Court, positioned at the southern part of the campus, features an NBA regulation-sized basketball court, a training area, and multipurpose event spaces. Inspirational phrases associated with former President Barack Obama, such as “Yes we can” and “No one does big things alone,” decorate the court.
The Obama Foundation, a private nonprofit, supervises the center’s construction and appointed Lakeside Alliance as the primary construction manager. Home Court, however, was erected under a separate contract by Elevate Design Builders, a minority-led joint venture that included BOWA Construction.
Legal and Financial Struggles
Though the liens are against the Obama Presidential Center property, they do not specify which party is legally responsible for the unpaid amounts. The liens were lodged around the center’s June 19 opening. The Cook County Clerk’s Office indicated there is generally a four-to-six-week lag before recorded documents are accessible online.
Fox News Digital reached out to Elevate, the Obama Foundation, and the subcontractors for comments but received no response.
Earlier Disputes
Previously, it was also reported that at least four additional companies filed liens during construction. Concrete Collective filed for a mechanics lien exceeding $40 million, replaced later by a court-authorized surety bond while the matter progresses legally.
Adamson Plumbing reported halting operations and dismissing workers after asserting a financial loss of nearly $4 million. Glass Management Services and Vision Painting & Decorating Services filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, although court records do not confirm linkages to the center’s construction.
Two earlier identified lien claims have since been withdrawn. One was finalized with the claimant recouping the amount sought, but the company still reported an overall loss of about $200,000. One claim remains unresolved.
