Park Slope Co-op Faces Tension Over Israeli Product Boycott

The Park Slope Food Co-op, a grocery store known for its community-oriented ethos, faces internal conflict due to a proposed boycott. This tension arises ahead of a vote on whether to stop selling some Israeli products, reflecting a broader debate on Middle East issues.

Inside the co-op, members browse various goods, while outside, tables represent both sides of the boycott debate. This issue has caused rifts among the Brooklyn liberal community, with heated discussions in recent years. A vote at the upcoming general meeting aims to resolve this matter.

Due to the heated nature of discussions, the co-op decided to increase security measures. The initiative follows threats and suspicious packages. Members received an email explaining the need for hired security and additional check-ins to ensure safety.

While most members engage respectfully, there are incidents where disagreements escalated. Some meetings have included laughter at serious concerns like antisemitism, troubling some Jewish leaders and members of one of the country’s largest co-ops.
