The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., has recently undergone a $14 million renovation. This effort was undertaken to enhance its appearance with an ‘American flag blue’ bottom. Unfortunately, soon after the renovation, the pool turned chartreuse due to an algal bloom. The National Park Service team struggled to address this issue on Tuesday.
The newly renovated pool, larger than ten Olympic-sized pools, draws water from the Tidal Basin, which often harbors algae. The challenges of maintaining such a massive structure complicate efforts to uphold a pristine appearance. After hearing complaints about its condition, former President Donald Trump initiated the project to beautify Washington as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
Efforts to manage the algae bloom include using chemicals and ozone nanobubbles. This water purification treatment helps avoid harsh chemicals, similar to pre-renovation maintenance. However, the newly painted bottom elevates water temperature, further stimulating algae growth.
Cochise Wanzer II, president of the Pool Service Company in Arlington, Virginia, shared his insights. He explained the difficulties of using untreated river water in a controlled setting. “You’re expecting different results from what occurs naturally,” he noted, while emphasizing the impact of the pool’s darker base on algae proliferation.
The National Park Service has expanded their methods to include hydrogen peroxide, a milder treatment than chlorine, which is environmentally friendly. As workers use vacuums to eliminate algae patches, tourists continue to visit the site, witnessing ongoing efforts.
The aesthetic endeavor behind the Reflecting Pool’s renovation aligns with Rick and Ariana Pettit’s experiences. Traveling from Las Vegas, the couple appreciated the improvements. They noted that the pool appeared more blue, echoing the project’s goal to refresh an iconic American landmark.
Wanzer suggests a different approach to maintaining the pool. Draining it completely, cleaning thoroughly, and refilling with treated water are potential steps for sustaining a clear and algae-free environment.
