The owner of a notable pro-America and Trump-themed home in Southern California, Kerry Sheron, has died following a violent attack by an alleged stranger. The incident took place last week.
Police announced on Sunday that 69-year-old Sheron succumbed to his injuries after spending several days in critical condition at a hospital. Sheron was a U.S. Army veteran who lived in Escondido, California. His home was well-known, adorned with American flags and various pro-Trump memorabilia.
The assault occurred near Sheron’s property, which had been the target of complaints and vandalism over the years. Prosecutors shared that Thomas Caleb Butler, age 32, allegedly attacked Sheron with a single punch to the jaw, causing Sheron to fall. Butler reportedly continued striking Sheron’s head.
Police arrested Butler without incident after a short search and charged him with attempted murder. Authorities stated that the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is considering whether to amend the charges based on ongoing reviews of the case.
Butler, identified as a Navy veteran reportedly suffering from PTSD, was believed by a friend to experience severe paranoia. The California Post quoted the friend saying Butler felt under constant threat despite taking prescribed medication for his condition.
On the Wednesday of the attack, police responded to reports around 2:15 p.m. of an assault near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, adjacent to what locals refer to as the “Trump House” in Escondido. Officers found Sheron with severe injuries. A bystander who attempted to intervene was also hurt during the alleged attack.
Maria Garcia, Sheron’s wife, expressed skepticism about her husband’s chances of recovery. She suggested the assault might have been motivated by political differences. Speaking with CBS 8, Garcia mentioned the animosity towards the flags displayed at their home.
The situation has raised questions and concerns about political and social divisions.
