David Thalman and Francesca Warick, both 20, went missing near a strait called Death’s Door in Wisconsin. Their bodies were found off Washington Island earlier this week, according to a statement from the Door County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Island Police Department.
Washington Island, positioned across from the Door Peninsula, requires kayakers to navigate the turbulent Death’s Door strait. The area has a notorious reputation, with hundreds of shipwrecks reported since the 19th century. It’s believed neither Thalman nor Warick were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident. The Door County Sheriff’s Office assumed command of the situation, transitioning the search into a recovery on Sunday.
“You don’t see a lot of young people like that anymore today,” commented Jane Lee, broker-owner of a RE/MAX office in Lake Bluff, discussing Thalman. “He’s very focused, always on time. We trust him 100 percent.”
