A Santa Monica police officer fatally shot an armed individual Saturday afternoon in Palisades Park, according to city officials. The incident occurred when officers responded to a domestic violence report at the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue.
Officers were interviewing witnesses when an unrelated person armed with a knife charged at them. The situation prompted an officer to discharge their firearm, hitting the individual. Police confirmed that the Santa Monica Fire Department provided medical assistance to the individual, who was later declared dead at a hospital. The officer involved in the shooting did not sustain any injuries.
Investigators remained on the scene Saturday afternoon to gather evidence and conduct a preliminary investigation, requesting the public to steer clear of the area. Police have not disclosed the identity of the deceased or detailed what might have led the individual to confront the officers.
