Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty on Wednesday following a grand jury’s indictment on charges of murdering his parents, actor-director Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment, returned on July 20 and revealed on Wednesday, accuses Reiner, 32, of two counts of murder with special allegations involving multiple murders and lying in wait. Prosecutors claim he used a knife in the process.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman. “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait. We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”

Reiner is also fighting for access to a $1.5 million trust fund to fund his defense in the high-profile trial. He appeared in court with Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene during his arraignment in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Prosecutors allege that Reiner fatally stabbed his father, 78, and mother, 70, on December 14, 2025, at their home in Brentwood. Police apprehended him later that day in Exposition Park.

Reiner is currently detained without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on September 15. If found guilty, he faces life imprisonment without parole, or potentially the death penalty. Prosecutors have yet to decide if they will pursue the death penalty.
