New Yorkers Respond to Trump’s Renaming of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’

New Yorkers have mixed reactions to President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America.’ Federalist elections correspondent Brianna Lyman spoke with residents to gather their opinions. This decision, alongside higher tariffs on Canadian goods, has sparked controversy.

Lyman also highlighted the Clinton Foundation’s internship postings, emphasizing the need for high discretion. Additionally, an incident at a Wisconsin youth football game was discussed on the show ‘Hannity,’ involving a parent allegedly tripping a player.

According to a recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos, 63% of surveyed Americans oppose the renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America, with only 14% in favor. The remaining participants were either undecided or skipped the question. Similarly, 57% opposed the new tariffs on Canadian goods, compared to 20% in support.

In response to the poll findings, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers expressed concerns about Canada’s trade practices, suggesting that President Trump is determined to protect American industries from exploitation.

President Trump’s actions were officially marked by the signing of an executive order last Thursday. During this event, attended by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Trump explained his decision to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, citing it as a strategic asset to the United States.

Trump indicated that the Geographic Names Information System would be updated to incorporate the name change. The order underscored Lake Ontario’s value, asserting that U.S. security and investment have facilitated shipping, recreation, and responsible use of this freshwater system.

This name change was part of Trump’s broader efforts to address trade disputes with Canada, especially after negotiations between the two countries faltered. Trump accused Canada of exploiting American businesses, asserting that their preferential treatment must end.

In late July, the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on various Canadian goods, leading to retaliatory tariffs by Canada of up to 50% on U.S. imports. The White House shared an official image of ‘Lake America’ shortly after the executive order was signed, previously known as Lake Ontario.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll included responses from 1,023 U.S. adults and carried a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
