New Jersey Voters Express Concern Over Congressman Tom Kean Jr.’s Medical Absence

In Westfield, New Jersey, voters recently gathered to discuss affordable housing and data centers, but the absence of their congressman, Republican Tom Kean Jr., drew significant attention. Kean’s unexplained medical absence has lasted nearly three months, leaving many questions unanswered.

Steve McCabe, an 80-year-old retired lawyer, questioned GOP state senator Jon Bramnick about Kean’s situation. Despite knowing Kean’s past dedication to voting, Bramnick was unable to provide answers. Kean has missed over 100 votes in Congress since his last appearance on March 5, raising concerns as he represents a district targeted by Democrats for upcoming elections.

“He’s going to be fully transparent,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Kean’s campaign consultant, Harrison Neely, stated the congressman faced a medical emergency. He assured transparency and a return to Kean’s full schedule soon. Voter Bruce Paterson expressed hopes for Kean’s recovery, showing plans to support him for maintaining balance in the state politically.

The 7th Congressional District has fluctuated between parties in recent elections, with redistricting making it more Republican-friendly. However, Kean’s unexplained absence is drawing attention, impacting Democratic strategies. Rebecca Bennett, a Democratic candidate, criticized Kean’s absence during critical infrastructure debates like the Gateway Tunnel funding.

With challengers like Michael Roth, Tina Shah, and Brian Varela, the stakes are high. Kean’s cash advantage offers hope, with Rowan Institute’s Benjamin Dworkin noting his return could bring voter connection by November. The main question remains on his effectiveness upon return rather than his voting absence over the spring.

Local speculation includes whether Bramnick could take the Republican nomination in the event Kean steps down, yet Bramnick questions alignment with today’s Republican Party.
