Location: Washington, N.J.
While Washington, D.C. is the epicenter of American politics, another Washington town holds significant influence on the future of Congress. This New Jersey town is where Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., rallied GOP supporters to ensure Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., gets re-elected.
Kean is campaigning for a third term in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. The district includes Trump’s Bedminster golf course, where he often spends time. Johnson emphasized the race’s importance, stating the GOP’s commitment to defending Kean’s seat against substantial opposition funding.
“It has a target on its back,” Johnson asserted, as reported by Fox News Digital.
The 7th District is a crucial battleground. Trump slightly won it in 2024, but Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill secured it by the same margin in 2025. Democrats aim to flip the seat again with former Navy helicopter pilot, Rebecca Bennett, as their candidate.
Bennett’s run represents a push to gain control of the House, which could shift legislative priorities away from Trump’s agenda.
Kean vs. Bennett
Kean expressed confidence in his re-election, highlighting his effective legislative track record. He criticized Bennett for perceived partisanship, claiming she avoids bipartisan interactions.
Bennett’s spokesperson, Carly Jones, refuted Kean’s accusations, affirming Bennett’s commitment to her faith and bipartisan coalition-building efforts.
Kean’s legislative efforts span both Biden and Trump administrations. During events, signage notably omitted party affiliations, emphasizing a broader appeal.
Midterm Influences
Traditional midterm outcomes favor the opposition party. Kean recalled legislative successes under Biden but maintained firm support for Trump.
Republican leaders, including Mark Teixeira, attended events to boost enthusiasm. Teixeira is running in a secure Texas district.
The GOP is capitalizing on internal Democrat shifts and expressing concerns over the party’s trajectory, which Johnson linked to foundational American principles.
Health and Campaign Challenges
Kean’s absence from March to June due to depression was followed by mental health legislation initiatives. Bennett acknowledged the situation but highlighted Kean’s stock trading activities during that period.
Bennett criticized the systemic issues affecting New Jersey, pledging military-grounded dedication to tackle them.
