New Era Begins for Los Angeles Lakers Without LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers enter a new phase as they prepare for their first season in eight years without the iconic LeBron James. Over the past seasons, James consistently shattered records and created memorable moments. A highlight with his son, Bronny James, drafted by the Lakers at No. 55 in 2024, was the historic father-to-son assist and vice versa.

This offseason, LeBron parted ways with the Lakers to explore free agency opportunities. Despite speculation about a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, James signed a two-year agreement with the Philadelphia 76ers.

At the Lakers’ media session kicking off training camp, Bronny James shared his thoughts on playing without his father on the team this season. “Feels like he’s not here. … He’s my dad. I spent almost 22 years with him, so, just another experience that I’m gonna be a part of, and I’m excited how it’s gonna feel during the season, too. Looking forward to it,” Bronny expressed, referring to the situation as “something different.”

The Lakers’ revamped roster now includes center Walker Kessler, acquired through a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz, along with guards Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton to strengthen the backcourt.

Last season, Bronny held a reserve role with the Lakers’ main squad and saw action with their G League affiliate, the now Coachella Valley Lakers. He participated in 42 games, averaging 2.9 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.6 rebounds in 8.9 minutes per game. Questions about his potential to become a star in the NBA linger as he plays in the shadow of his superstar father. “I’m excited for the experience, to experience something different with him not being here and to see how the staff treats me without him being there and all my teammates and stuff like that. I’m excited for it, and I’m excited for the season,” Bronny shared during the media session.

The Lakers will start their regular-season campaign on Wednesday, Oct. 21, against the Golden State Warriors. A much-anticipated matchup could occur on Christmas Day when Bronny and LeBron face off for the first time on the court as the Lakers host the 76ers.
