Nebraska Democratic congressional nominee Denise Powell criticized a 2023 state law restricting gender transition procedures for minors. She described the law as “discriminatory and hateful” in her social media posts, sparking backlash from critics.
Before securing her nomination, Powell opposed LB 574, known as the “Let Them Grow Act.” This act restricts gender transition procedures for minors, including the regulation of puberty blockers and hormone treatments for those under 19. In March 2023, Powell urged Nebraskans on Facebook to contact state senators, join her at the Capitol, and oppose the bill.
“Today is the final day of the first round of floor debate on LB 574, a bill that would prohibit and punish healthcare providers from providing gender-affirming care to children under the age of 19,” she wrote.
Powell’s actions drew attention during a campaign event alongside former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. She highlighted that similar laws were passing nationwide, including in states like Iowa and Kentucky, advocating that Nebraska should set a positive example.
She encouraged supporters to engage with lawmakers actively, emphasizing that “trans people belong in Nebraska and everywhere.” Powell also used TikTok to oppose the legislation, posting a video on February 8, 2023, and expressing dissatisfaction with the legislative process.
The Nebraska Legislature passed LB 574 by a 33-15 vote, and Governor Jim Pillen signed it into law. Despite opposition, a Nebraska First PAC poll indicated that 61% of likely voters supported the restrictions for those under 19.
Republican state Sen. Kathleen Kauth’s attempt to expand LB 574 to ban puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for those under 19 failed to advance.
Critics like Jon Schweppe, a former Trump official, labeled Powell’s stance as radical, arguing she supports policies opposed to parental rights in education. Zach Bannon from the National Republican Congressional Committee echoed similar sentiments, stating that Powell rejected “common sense” values.
Powell, running against Republican Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, aims to lower costs, protect healthcare access, and oppose former President Donald Trump’s policies, according to her campaign website.
