Tall Leaders at the NATO Summit
In recent years, former U.S. President Donald Trump often stood out in group photos at international summits because of his height. However, at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, this was not the case. Trump found himself looking up to several leaders, including Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The summit featured a lineup of unusually tall heads of state. Rama is listed at 6 feet 7 inches, making him the tallest among the attendees. Other leaders such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also towered above Trump, who is reported to be 6 feet 3 inches tall.
This year’s summit included other notably tall leaders like Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Historical records of world leaders’ heights are not comprehensive, but this gathering featured many leaders above average height.
NATO Height Rankings
Edi Rama, the tallest leader attending the NATO summit, was formerly a professional basketball player and stands at 6 foot 7 inches. Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor, is reported to be 6 foot 6 inches. Mark Rutte is said to be 6 foot 4 inches. Prime Ministers Pedro Sánchez of Spain and Andrej Plenković of Croatia are approximately 6 foot 3 inches. Other leaders, such as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, are shorter, standing around 6 feet.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are reportedly 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 8 inches, respectively. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is reported between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 4 inches.
Height Among U.S. Presidents
Donald Trump is among the tallest modern U.S. presidents. The tallest U.S. president was Abraham Lincoln at 6 foot 4 inches. Lyndon Johnson was 6 foot 3 ½ inches tall.
Other notable tall presidents include Thomas Jefferson at 6 foot 2 ½ inches and George Washington at 6 foot 2 inches. Several presidents stood at 6 feet 1 inch, including John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama, while James Madison was the shortest, standing only 5 foot 4 inches.
NATO Comparisons
The NATO summit’s traditional family photo highlighted that international politics isn’t only about stature. Trump typically appeared tall among global leaders, but this summit offered a more level visual representation.
In 2016, during Barack Obama’s presidency, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić was one of the tallest at the summit in Warsaw, Poland. Vučić stood at 6 foot 6 inches, above other leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was 6 foot 2 inches.
George W. Bush, at 6 feet tall, attended the NATO summit in 2006 in Latvia. That year saw French President Jacques Chirac at 6 foot 2.4 inches and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at 6 foot 2 inches.
