Mysterious Death of a High-Ranking Russian Officer
Colonel Sergei Shalaginov, a former deputy head at the Center for Combating Extremism in the Sverdlovsk region, was found dead after reportedly falling from a window. His death, occurring after his resignation, is the latest in a series of mysterious fatalities involving Russian officials.
The discovery was made in Yekaterinburg, about 800 miles east of Moscow. Accounts of Shalaginov’s death vary, with some outlets linking his death to internal disagreements at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. However, the Sverdlovsk department of the ministry has denied any such conflicts.
Conflicting Reports on Shalaginov’s Death
The pro-Russian site URA.ru reported that Shalaginov’s death was a suicide following disagreements with ministry leadership. This article was reportedly removed after publication. Authorities confirmed Shalaginov’s death, but a spokesperson denied any related conflict, instead mentioning Shalaginov’s refusal of a promotion. Local news described him as a well-regarded and competent leader, showing great care for his team.
“An irreparable loss,” stated Valery Gorelykh, a police department spokesperson.
Images circulated online show a blurred-out image of a body on a sidewalk near a residential building on Shchorsa Street. Reports from Eastern Europe suggest he fell from the ninth floor, although these details remain unconfirmed.
Attempted Assassination of Russian General
Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich was reportedly shot in an assassination attempt in the Saratov region. His involvement in a contentious missile strike on a Ukrainian children’s hospital during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine drew criticism. A criminal investigation into attempted murder and arms trafficking is underway, though officials have not publicly named him as the victim.
This incident marks the third attempted assassination of Russian officers within two weeks, highlighting the ongoing tensions and violence among high-ranking officials.
