Musician Zach Bryan’s Statement at Gillette Stadium and Ongoing Controversy

Musician Zach Bryan made headlines during his recent performance at Gillette Stadium by wearing a shirt with the message “Free Palestine”. The performance was part of a two-show event, with the second concert scheduled for Saturday night. The shirt also featured the phrase “An appeal to heaven” alongside a pine tree logo, a reference with historical significance.

The phrase “An appeal to heaven” has roots in the Revolutionary War period and was part of Massachusetts’ official maritime flag until 1971. It reflects a belief in divine intervention for deliverance from tyranny. This historical context was highlighted in a 2024 Associated Press article.

Earlier, rapper Macklemore faced backlash after expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments at MetLife Stadium, leading to his exclusion from Ed Sheeran’s “Loop” tour. Robert Kraft, New England Patriots owner and owner of Gillette Stadium, requested Macklemore’s removal due to previous actions and statements deemed offensive to the Jewish community. Kraft’s reasoning was clear; he found Macklemore’s participation would cross unacceptable boundaries.

Macklemore publicly acknowledged the reality of antisemitism and argued that criticizing Israel should not equate to hatred toward Jews. Following the incident, other acts on Sheeran’s tour left in solidarity with Macklemore. He pledged $1 million to Palestinian causes and challenged Kraft to equal his donation. Kraft later announced a $2 million donation pledge in collaboration with Sheeran.

Sheeran’s concerts at Gillette Stadium, initially set for late September, were postponed due to severe weather conditions in the area.
