MRC Challenges ABC’s Broadcast Licenses

The Media Research Center (MRC) is challenging Disney’s ABC, urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) not to renew the network’s licenses. MRC argues that ABC functions more like a partisan cable network than a broadcaster serving the public interest.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr had previously stated in April that ABC stations must show they operate in the public interest. This comes amid a broader review of Disney’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.

MRC criticizes ABC for spreading falsehoods and justifying political violence, calling for FCC intervention.

Bozell expressed that broadcast licenses are not entitlements. He insists that if ABC continues to operate as a partisan network, it should relinquish its broadcasting privileges.

The Disney-affiliated stations, whose license renewals are under scrutiny, include outlets in cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Originally set for renewal between 2028 and 2031, Trump’s FCC accelerated the process.

MRC filed a detailed petition, asserting that ABC’s output over 38 years shows systemic bias. The petition lists several studies and examples to support this claim.

ABC hosts a range of programs from entertainment like “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to news shows like “Good Morning America,” “The View,” and “World News Tonight.” MRC accuses programs, particularly “The View,” of being overly partisan, featuring predominantly liberal perspectives.

Despite acknowledging ABC’s First Amendment rights, MRC notes the network cannot use public airwaves to support partisan aims without consequences.

ABC has responded by calling on viewers to voice support through the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System. Over 100,000 comments have been submitted.

The FCC is also investigating “The View” regarding equal time for political candidates. ABC considers “The View” to qualify as bona fide news, arguing it should be free from the equal time rule. MRC disputes this, labeling the show as politically biased.

David Bozell has positioned himself as a persistent critic, documenting evidence against “The View.” He argues it functions as a Democratic Party tool, against figures like Donald Trump.

The MRC plans to present extensive documentation to affirm its allegations of bias and electioneering by ABC programs.
