Michael Lombardi Resigns from UNC Football Program Amid Investigation

Michael Lombardi has resigned as the general manager of the University of North Carolina (UNC) football program. His departure follows being placed on paid administrative leave during an ongoing internal investigation by the university’s Office of University Counsel. Despite his resignation, the investigation will continue.

Lombardi joined the program in 2025, before Bill Belichick’s first season as head coach. He was a close advisor to Belichick, a seven-time Super Bowl-winning coach. The University announced Lombardi left his position effective September 3, 2026. His tenure at UNC made him the highest-paid college football operations executive, reportedly earning $1.5 million annually.

The internal probe into Lombardi started in late July. The university has not specified the allegations but cited confidential personnel issues, resulting in a restrained public commentary. The details and nature of the investigation remain undisclosed.

Bill Belichick addressed reporters when Lombardi was put on leave, acknowledging ongoing matters and mentioning necessary adjustments due to the timing of events within the calendar year. These adjustments were approached day-to-day as the team began preseason camp.

Despite the administrative changes, UNC’s football team began Belichick’s second season with a strong performance, upsetting TCU. Last season, Belichick guided the team to a 4-8 record.
