The family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican man shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston, is seeking answers from Trump administration officials. The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 7 a.m., when ICE attempted to pull over Salgado Araujo’s vehicle as part of a targeted enforcement operation. ICE claims Salgado Araujo rammed their vehicle with his van, refused commands, and tried to run over an officer, prompting the officer to shoot in self-defense.
Ronaldo Salgado, Salgado Araujo’s son, described his father as a “man of routine” who immigrated to the United States 35 years ago. Salgado Araujo was a local business owner who diligently worked to provide his family with the American dream. At the time of the encounter with ICE, he was heading to a project site. Three other individuals, including Salgado Araujo’s brother, were detained by federal authorities. Ronaldo expressed his dismay over the incident on Facebook, stating his father did not deserve to die.
An ICE spokesperson confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and the FBI are investigating the shooting, along with a potential assault on a federal officer. Ronaldo Salgado learned of the incident from his mother, later discovering his father’s death through a news report.
Salgado Araujo dedicated over 20 years to home building in suburban Houston and was close to securing legal immigration status. He had recently completed constructing a family home and often relaxed on the porch enjoying meals prepared by his wife. Ronaldo mourned his father’s loss, saying, “I am deeply heartbroken to see that the man who taught me the value of hard work, family values, and education will no longer spend time on that porch.”
A petition led by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) demands full transparency, urging authorities to release all evidence related to the shooting. Juan Proaño, LULAC National CEO, criticized the federal agency’s narrative, labeling it as a repeated “playbook.” Roman Palomares, LULAC National President, expressed that the act was “unacceptable and un-American,” insisting on a thorough investigation.
Various officials have called for an independent investigation. Houston Mayor John Whitmire highlighted the complexity of the issue while acknowledging the city’s limitations in probing federal actions. Despite these constraints, he advocates for transparency, stating, “Our prayers go out to the family and the community that feels the pain and anxiety.”
Criticism followed from public officials, including Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones, who condemned the Trump administration for its immigration enforcement practices. Houston City Councilwoman Dr. Letitia Plummer demanded an independent review, pointing out similarities to previous fatal shootings by ICE. Additionally, U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia emphasized the need for accountability, vowing to pursue answers related to Salgado Araujo’s targeting and legal procedures undertaken during the operation.
