Erik and Lyle Menendez have secured a parole hearing set for March 2027, advancing their opportunity by a year. This change comes after provisions in Proposition 9 enabled new parole hearing dates upon demonstrating changes in circumstances or new suitability information, as reported by The Orange County Register.
The Menendez brothers were convicted for the 1989 killings of their parents, Jose and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, in their Beverly Hills residence. The siblings, initially sentenced to life without parole, received re-sentencing in May 2025, allowing for parole eligibility. This revision followed a resurgence of advocacy driven by a Netflix series that spotlighted their case.
“For almost 40 years, Erik and Lyle have worked to take responsibility for their actions, confront and heal from the unimaginable abuse and trauma they endured,” a family statement mentions. “Through efforts such as helping to establish a hospice program and creating Green Space, they remind people with life sentences of the potential to choose growth, healing, and accountability.”
The brothers maintain the killings were a reaction to prolonged sexual abuse by their father, allegations prosecutors deny, attributing the motivation to financial greed. Last year, their parole was denied, but recent developments provide hope to their supporters.
Their family expressed gratitude for the re-sentencing and the parole board’s recognition of the brothers’ transformation. Erik, 55, and Lyle, 58, serve their sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, with family members expressing hope for their reintegration into everyday life.
