Melat Kiros, a Democratic congressional candidate in Colorado, downplayed issues raised about communists within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a faction of the Democratic Party. She argued that Republicans are amplifying the issue to counter the rising influence of the socialist movement before the midterm elections.
During an interview on PBS’s “Firing Line,” host Margaret Hoover asked Kiros about criticism that a number of DSA members, including some national leaders, identify as communists. Kiros responded by pointing out that the Democratic Party includes a wide range of views: “Some members of the Democratic Party are proudly proclaiming themselves as capitalists, and it’s a big tent.” She emphasized that voter choice ultimately determines political outcomes.
Kiros dismissed Republican warnings about communists winning elections as misinformation. She stated that until a self-proclaimed communist wins an election, these discussions are merely distractions. When Hoover referred to former President Donald Trump’s comments calling the DSA “hardcore, godless communists,” Kiros clarified, “No, I’m not a communist.” She attributed Republican attacks to fears of the DSA’s economic policies gaining traction among voters.
Kiros explained, “The Republican Party, and the oligarchy behind it, are concerned because our message of economic populism is resonating.” Kiros, 29, had defeated long-standing Representative Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. She is one of 28 candidates endorsed by the far-left group to win a Democratic primary.
The DSA’s National Political Committee, consisting of 25 members, leads the organization. Their “Workers Deserve More” campaign proposes drastic changes, such as abolishing the Senate and moving away from the current presidential and judicial systems. However, Kiros stated not all members fully agree with the DSA’s platform. “Our platform is voted on democratically, and not every member agrees with everything,” she explained.
Hoover noted Kiros’s support for “Medicare-for-all” and universal childcare, although she rejected abolishing the Senate or defunding the police. Kiros advocates for a 32-hour workweek, among other issues. She defended her socialist philosophy, arguing it aligns with the values of the Declaration of Independence more than capitalism does.
Kiros has faced criticism over her stance on Israel. Denver Jewish community leaders expressed concern about her response to the 2025 Boulder firebombing and her statements about Israel, including accusations of genocide and apartheid.
The DSA continues to grow, with new leaders like New York City’s Zohran Mamdani gaining prominence. Yet, a July Fox News poll showed that 56% of registered voters view the DSA unfavorably, with 31% holding a favorable view. Among Democrats, 59% had a favorable opinion of the DSA.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Republican National Committee, Kiros, and the DSA for comments, but there has been no response.
