In Vermont, Democrats have selected a new candidate to challenge Republican Governor Phil Scott as he seeks a sixth term in office. Economist Amanda Janoo has secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, after defeating former child advocacy organization CEO Aly Richards in the primary. Richards had received endorsements from former Democratic Governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin.

Phil Scott, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary, is a popular figure in Vermont politics. Should he win the upcoming general election, he will surpass Howard Dean as Vermont’s longest-serving governor. Vermont is one of only two states, alongside New Hampshire, where governors are elected every two years.

Governor Scott, known for his moderate political stance, has been a consistent critic of former President Donald Trump. In the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, Scott endorsed former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and he voted for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the general election against Trump.

Democrats face a significant challenge in unseating Scott. Despite the state’s usual Democratic leaning in elections, Scott received 73% of the vote in his last re-election bid, improving on the 69% he received two years prior.
