Mel Gibson Apologizes for Mocking Sign Language Interpreter at Fan Expo

Mel Gibson issued an apology following an incident at Fan Expo Canada. The 70-year-old actor appeared to mock an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter during a panel event held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

“Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed,” Gibson remarked to Fox News Digital.

Gibson emphasized that his actions were not intentional and apologized to anyone affected.

Negative reactions quickly spread online after Gibson’s panel, “From Braveheart to Mad Max: A Q&A with Mel Gibson,” at Constitution Hall.

One person shared their disbelief on social media, commenting on how the ASL interpreter was simply doing their job amidst applause from the audience.

Another responded, acknowledging the disrespect but questioned the characterization of the act as cruel, comparing Gibson’s behavior to that of an immature child.

Other users criticized Gibson, noting the hard work involved in getting ASL recognized and respected.

However, some defended Gibson’s behavior, noting the frequency of such jokes in comedy.

Despite the controversy, Gibson confirmed at the event that he is actively involved in post-production for “The Resurrection of the Christ.” The project is being edited in Toronto.

Further developments included former President Donald Trump announcing Gibson and others as Special Ambassadors to Hollywood in 2025. The initiative aims to revitalize business in Hollywood, which has faced challenges in recent years.

Gibson expressed surprise at his appointment, but affirmed his readiness to contribute to the administration.
