Stephen Vitale, CEO, and Rocco Vitale, President of Pyrotecnico, discussed the impressive planning for a record-breaking July 4th fireworks show in Washington, D.C. This show involved six months of preparation, a team of 75 people, and the coordination of 850,000 fireworks shells. The display, part of the America250 celebrations, will take place across multiple land and barge locations.
With the 250th birthday of America approaching, agencies are on alert for potential security threats during July Fourth celebrations. This includes the Salute to America 250 Celebration and Fireworks in Washington, D.C., which is expected to be a grand patriotic display. Over a million attendees are anticipated to gather at the National Mall to listen to President Donald Trump and witness the historic pyrotechnics.
Jason Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent, explained that agencies have been preparing for this for weeks or even months. He emphasized the importance of a coordinated government approach to avoid missing potential threats.
Despite not knowing of specific threats, Pack acknowledged that anything is possible due to the holiday’s significance. The heightened security in D.C. is necessary with the expected large crowd. Past incidents, like the mass shooting during a July Fourth parade in Highland Park, Illinois, highlight the need for vigilance.
Paul Mauro, former NYPD Legal Bureau Commanding Officer, stressed the importance of local law enforcement preparing safeguards to prevent such tragedies. He encouraged small cities to communicate with larger agencies like the FBI and Homeland Security.
Other public safety risks have occurred, such as the 2021 vehicle-ramming at a Waukesha parade where Darrell Brooks killed six people. This incident demonstrated the unpredictability and potential for such attacks in smaller communities. Mauro noted that local police should anticipate these threats rather than assume they won’t happen.
In 2017, another vehicle-ramming attack happened in New York City when Sayfullo Saipov killed eight during a Halloween parade. Only through barriers blocking access did officials limit the impact, though Saipov still found an alternative route to commit his attack.
Mauro concluded that recognizing and preparing for threats with physical security measures can significantly reduce potential casualties. Federal and local collaboration, including using fusion centers, helps monitor threats and improves public safety during large events.
If suspicious activities are noticed ahead of the holiday, inform the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or call 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). For immediate threats, contact 911.
