Polls have closed in Massachusetts, where a significant political contest unfolds. The Democratic Party’s future hangs between a seasoned incumbent and a more moderate challenger. In an uncommon scenario, progressives are backing the incumbent, 80-year-old Senator Ed Markey, a departure from the usual trend.
Senator Markey, known for his progressive stance, is up against 47-year-old Representative Seth Moulton. This race signifies the Democratic Party’s shift towards generational evolution. This movement gained momentum following questions about then-81-year-old President Joe Biden’s capacity after a challenging debate performance.
Currently, there is a heated competition to replace Moulton in the U.S. House, with four members of the state’s entirely Democratic congressional delegation, including House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, facing challenges from the left. Additionally, Massachusetts Republicans will select a gubernatorial candidate to oppose Democratic Governor Maura Healey.
“The top five most heated moments in the final Markey-Moulton debate showdown.”
On Tuesday, the Markey-Moulton battle stood out. Markey, a long-serving House member before his Senate victory in 2013, enjoys support from progressive stalwarts like Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Markey co-authored the Green New Deal with Ocasio-Cortez seven years ago. He remains committed to key progressive issues like Medicare for All, a Trans Bill of Rights, taxing billionaires, and reducing military expenditure.

Moulton, a Marine Corps combat veteran, is supported by New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and recently gained the endorsement of the Boston Globe. Moulton emphasizes generational change, suggesting the need for age limits in Congress.
Markey, in response to Moulton’s arguments, stated that he remains more energized than ever. A moment of uncertainty showed when Markey was unclear about using AI platforms like Claude or ChatGPT, mentioning he uses whatever is available on his devices.
Both agree on some issues, such as abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and controversial topics in sports. Moulton, however, has had to apologize for previous remarks on gender in sports competition.
Heading into the primary, Markey led in polling and fundraising. The winner will likely dominate the general election against Republican attorney John Deaton.
Several candidates, including former Andover Selectman Dan Koh, are vying to succeed Moulton, with Koh receiving endorsements from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Democratic primary winner will face unopposed Republican Micah Q. Jones.
“These 12 midterm races will decide which party controls the Senate.”
Clark, along with longtime Democratic Representatives Stephen Lynch and Richard Neal, face left-wing challengers emphasizing the need for fresh leadership. Additionally, three-term Democratic Representative Jake Auchincloss faces a primary challenge.
For the Republican gubernatorial nomination, Army veteran Mike Minogue contends with Marine Corps veteran Briani Shortsleeve. Minogue holds the endorsement of the Massachusetts GOP. The general election poses a challenge against Healey in a state typically favoring Democrats.
“Democrat Gov. Maura Healey is running for re-election and recently signed the PROTECT Act, restricting ICE presence in specific locations.”
This primary may be the last under the current system. In the upcoming general election, Massachusetts voters will decide on a ballot initiative to potentially abolish the primary system, opting instead for a single, all-party primary where the top two vote-getters advance, regardless of party affiliation.
