Masked Protester Spray-Paints Slogans Amid High Tensions in Austin

A masked protester was filmed spray-painting controversial slogans on a bridge in Austin, Texas. The incident occurred near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard, a focal point for protests following the shooting of Venezuelan man Wilber Rafael Garces Perez by an ICE agent.

Protests have heightened tensions in the area since Garces Perez was shot while delivering food for DoorDash. Graffiti spotted at the site includes slogans such as ‘Kill Donald Trump,’ ‘F*** ICE,’ and ‘Kill all pedos.’ Another phrase reads, ‘It doesn’t stop with Epstein.’ The column also bears a message of ‘Talarico’ accompanied by a heart, implying ‘love wins.’

The circumstances behind Garces Perez’s shooting remain unclear. His attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, stated that Garces Perez’s vehicle was ‘sideswiped’ twice by an unmarked ICE vehicle. He was then shot, hospitalized, and released into ICE custody with a bullet still lodged in him. Lincoln-Goldfinch noted he is experiencing left side paralysis.

A DHS spokesperson described Garces Perez as an ‘illegal alien,’ indicating he entered the U.S. under a removal order during the Biden administration. The shooting happened ‘during a law enforcement operation.’

Lincoln-Goldfinch asserted Garces Perez was an asylum seeker who entered through a parole program and obtained a valid work permit. She attributed deportation order issues to address changes.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis promised a thorough investigation, with efforts to gather physical evidence, review footage, and interview witnesses. She encouraged public contributions of photos and videos, emphasizing evidence over speculation. Davis committed to providing updates as new, verifiable information emerges.

The graffiti has triggered backlash on social media, particularly from right-wing commentators. Andrew Kolvet of Turning Point USA remarked on the dichotomy between media portrayals and the protester’s actions. Conservative influencer Nick Sortor vehemently called for immediate federal agent intervention.

Conversely, Democratic lawmakers are pressing for action regarding the shooting. Texas state representative James Talarico advocated for an independent investigation and complete video footage release. He criticized the handling of Garces Perez’s situation, highlighting his legal entry and lack of a criminal record. Talarico questioned the legitimacy of the enforcement actions.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed outrage and dissatisfaction with ICE’s involvement, demanding Austin police participation for unbiased oversight. He saw their role as essential to ensuring accountability.

This story remains developing with potential updates forthcoming.
