A couple from Maryland has been arrested following the death of their 2-month-old daughter, who suffered from head injuries. According to prosecutors and charging documents, the father allegedly claimed that the girl’s injuries resulted from ‘Satan slamming a door on the child.’
Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21, are charged with first and second-degree child abuse, first and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. These charges could result in a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison. Baltimore Police noted that additional homicide charges might follow depending on the autopsy results.
On Wednesday, doctors at Harbor Hospital found the child with severe bruising around her eyes and jawline, describing these as ‘suspicious.’ A subsequent examination indicated ‘significant head and brain trauma’ and ‘multiple skull fractures’ not identified initially, according to charging documents reported by CBS Baltimore.
The father allegedly informed police that a supernatural force or Satan caused the injuries by slamming a door on the child. The mother attributed the injuries to their 2-year-old son jumping on the bed, causing the baby to fall, a prosecutor reported at a court hearing.
The prosecutor questioned this explanation, arguing that such a fall could not account for the severe injuries. The mother reportedly took the unresponsive baby to the hospital on Wednesday, initially stating the baby became unresponsive while lying face down in bed after being fed.
Doctors noted the baby suffered ‘significant head and brain trauma,’ including frontal lobe hemorrhaging and a subdural hemorrhage. Hospital staff was unable to revive the child, who died in the hospital.
The couple, both Guatemalan nationals, admitted to investigators that they noticed bruises on their daughter on September 6, with vomiting occurring the following day. They did not seek medical care until the baby became unresponsive. Prosecutors deemed them ‘an extreme flight risk,’ and both were held without bail.
