Mark Ruffalo Responds to Antisemitism Allegations Amid Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Criticism

Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo recently responded to allegations that his criticism of the proposed Warner Bros. Discovery merger, led by the Ellison family, was antisemitic. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Ruffalo expressed his dismay over the accusations, stating, “The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest.”

Ruffalo clarified that his criticism focused on actions by the Israeli prime minister and aspects related to military technology contracts and executive decisions, not Jewish individuals. He emphasized that his views stem from political beliefs, not hostility toward Jewish people. He stated, “My views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect.” Ruffalo acknowledged the influence of Jewish friends and colleagues in his life, which shaped his understanding of acting, activism, and humanism.

Accusations arose after a Paramount spokesperson accused Ruffalo of introducing “antisemitic tropes” into a corporate dispute. The allegations followed Ruffalo’s reposting of video remarks from Paramount board member Safra Catz, who highlighted the “really profoundly scary technologies” used by Oracle to assist the Israeli military. Ruffalo commented on Oracle’s role, “This is the company that Larry Ellison is using to fund his son David’s Warner Bros acquisition.”

Paramount responded, stating they were troubled by the invocation of antisemitic tropes, writing, “Words like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid,’ applied to a corporate transaction, aren’t just wrong — they’re a bridge too far, and they cheapen the very real suffering those words are meant to describe.” Paramount emphasized they do not tolerate prejudice of any kind.

Ruffalo further discussed the potential merger’s “real consequences” for affected individuals and the broader impact on the nation. He emphasized the importance of scrutinizing Oracle’s business model, including its data and surveillance technology, and the potential threats to editorial freedom. He voiced concerns about the livelihood of families affected by the merger, considering the significant control one family would gain over major media outlets like CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros.

Ruffalo argued for a serious national security review, citing lawmakers’ concerns from various political sides. He pointed out the lack of clear answers from regulators and urged that the merger not proceed until such reviews occur.

The merger deal, valued at $111 billion, faced challenges from 12 state attorneys general, with companies agreeing not to finalize the deal until June 1, 2027, or after a court decision on the states’ claims. Ruffalo’s response highlights the need for transparency and thorough examination of all issues surrounding the merger.
