Maria Marszewski, born Kim Yong Soon, is a name known to many in Chicago for her incredible contributions to the community and her entrepreneurial spirit. Emigrating from South Korea to Chicago 60 years ago, she started a new life alongside her husband, James Marszewski. The couple made their home on the South Side of Chicago.

Maria faced adversity, becoming a widow with two young sons to support only 13 years after her marriage. She took over her late husband’s bar business and began a journey of reinvention. Initially trained as a beautician, she earned her cosmetology license in Chicago in the early 1970s and opened a small beauty shop in her home. Her exploration into the real estate world started with purchasing a strip mall, leading to her own unique restaurant, House of Kim, which offered Korean and Japanese cuisine.

In 1986, Maria acquired a building in Bridgeport and took control of an existing bar, renaming it Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar in 2010. Her sons transformed it further, creating a cherished community space. A key highlight of the bar is Marz Beer and the Korean Polish sausage, crafted at Kimski, the bar’s creative restaurant.

Maria Marszewski has held several roles, notably as the Owner of her establishment. Known affectionately as The Duchess of Bridgeport, her legacy continues through her family. Her wisdom and example have been passed down to the next generation.

Maria reflects on her journey, emphasizing the satisfaction of supporting her family through her business. She advises the new generation to manage business responsibly, steering clear of excess. Despite running a bar, Maria abstains from alcohol, preferring hot tea or coffee.
