Man Accused in Virginia Deputy’s Death Captured

Authorities in North Carolina captured Michael Puckett, labeled as “armed and extremely dangerous,” after a manhunt. He was wanted for the fatal shooting of a Virginia deputy.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office announced Puckett’s capture in Surry County. Earlier, he was seen on a wildlife camera near Mount Airy, wearing a baseball cap.

Puckett allegedly ambushed two deputies during a Friday night welfare check. Deputy Logan Utt, a 31-year-old military veteran, was killed. Another officer, saved by a ballistic vest, was injured.

Before his capture, the FBI and U.S. Marshals offered a combined $60,000 reward for information leading to Puckett’s arrest. It’s uncertain if this reward facilitated the capture.

“Deputy Logan Utt’s sacrifice is a testament to his bravery and dedication to his community,” said Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.

The incident began around 9:30 p.m. when Carroll County deputies went to a home for a welfare check. Puckett reportedly opened fire on the deputies. Utt was killed, but Puckett escaped after deputies returned fire.

Michael Puckett faces an aggravated murder charge in Virginia. The FBI’s Richmond Field Office, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, and local agencies worked together in the search effort.

Logan Utt joined the force in 2023, fulfilling his dream to become a deputy sheriff. Sheriff Kevin Kemp called his death a significant loss for Carroll County and Utt’s family.

The surviving deputy is in stable condition. Utt leaves behind a wife and children. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated officer.
