Macklemore Addresses Removal from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour

Rapper Macklemore has responded after being removed from the remaining U.S. dates of Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour. The decision came amid backlash over pro-Palestinian remarks he made onstage. In a detailed Instagram statement, Macklemore attributed his exit to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. He claimed Kraft pressured other stadium owners into not hosting him, rather than blaming Sheeran or Pink, who also criticized his comments.

“Ed Sheeran and his team have decided to remove me from The Loop tour,” Macklemore wrote. He shared that Kraft said he would be barred from Gillette Stadium, owned by Kraft’s company, where the tour planned a stop later in the month. Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, revealed that Kraft influenced other stadium owners to present an ultimatum: remove Macklemore or lose performance privileges.

Macklemore explained his ongoing dialogue with Sheeran, a friend for 13 years, emphasizing that their disagreement was not rooted in malice. He highlighted his stance on the phrase “Free Palestine” and the display of the Palestinian flag. He noted such expressions upset individuals Sheeran interacted with, despite Sheeran maintaining neutrality publicly. Macklemore stressed neither he, Sheeran, nor Pink are victims in this situation, expressing hope their friendship persists.

“I hope this isn’t the end of my relationship with Ed. Thirteen years of friendship doesn’t disappear because of one painful disagreement,” he stated.

In his statement, Macklemore addressed previous performances where he made similar remarks, questioning why the issue arose now, highlighting the risk involved when sharing a stage with a major artist. He suggested his advocacy for Palestinian liberation posed a threat to the status quo.

He clarified that potential consequences like losing money, brand deals, and opportunities don’t deter him. He emphasized there is no neutral stance between oppressors and oppressed, highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people.

Macklemore argued that accusations of antisemitism are used to stifle criticism of Israel’s policies, which doesn’t protect Jewish people but shields Israel from accountability.

Reflecting on his message, Macklemore shared a phrase from his brother Omar: لا شكر على واجب (La shukra ala wajeb), meaning “There is no thanks for a duty.” He views his advocacy as a duty rather than an act deserving gratitude.

“I needed 2 shows to stand in front of 90,000 people and say words that became too dangerous: Free Palestine,” Macklemore wrote. He reaffirmed his commitment to the cause, expressing his intent to continue the conversation with Sheeran and remain informed about Palestine.
