Luigi Mangione announced his intention to plead guilty to federal stalking charges in a Manhattan court. The 28-year-old could face a life sentence for targeting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was murdered in December 2024.
Previously, speculation arose over Mangione’s potential admission of guilt, possibly aiming for a double jeopardy claim ahead of his state murder trial. Prosecutors argue that Mangione, disguised in a hood, shot Thompson in the back outside a Hilton Hotel on December 4, 2024.
Judge Margaret Garnett asked Mangione if he understood the potential life sentence. He confirmed with a “Yes.” Mangione admitted to posing as an investor when contacting UnitedHealthcare for conference details. When invited to speak further, Mangione declined.
Mangione explained discovering the conference location online and traveling to New York with the intent to shoot Thompson. “On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan,” he stated in court.
Federal prosecutors presented evidence, including surveillance footage and Mangione’s travel to New York. The footage shows a hooded figure shoot Thompson before fleeing on a bicycle. Investigators found Mangione’s DNA and fingerprints near the scene. A murder weapon was found in his possession upon arrest, supported by cellphone evidence and an eyewitness account.
Judge Garnett set a sentencing hearing for December 18. In response to the plea, a UnitedHealth Group representative expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s efforts, while Thompson’s family acknowledged the plea as a step towards justice.
Mangione stands accused of multiple charges, including second-degree murder and firearms offenses, across New York and Pennsylvania.
